YOU ARE ALL INVITED AT”Perspectives on the Global Financial Crisis and the State of the European Economy”

Thursday, October 27, 6:00-8:00pm
25 Broadway, New York, NY
Global financial markets have recently been in turmoil, in part due to Europe’s debt problems and large budget deficits. Greece, Ireland, Spain and Portugal and Italy struggle to maintain control of their sovereign debt with unpopular budget cuts and austerity measures. The default of any of these countries’ debt could resonate on corporations around the world and threatens to bring some of world’s major economies back into a recession. Economic growth forecasts of key European countries such as France and Germany have already been reduced while the United States, Europe’s major trading partner, faces its own economic challenges. Please join us at this timely event as we discuss Europe’s sovereign debt crisis and its implications on investments, corporations and the global economy.

Moderated by Lori Bittner, Director of the Deloitte Federal Services and Emerging Markets, Deloitte Consulting LLP, this discussion will feature:

§ Georges Pineau, Permanent Representative to the International Monetary Fund, European Central Bank, Washington DC

§ Antonio de Lecea, Minister for economic and financial affairs and principal advisor to the Head of the Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, D.C.

§ Gianluca Clementi, Professor, Department of Economics, Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York University

§ Additional speakers may join the panel (TBD)

Topics on the agenda will include:

§ State of the current financial markets in the Eurozone
§ Current budget deficits of European countries facing debt problems, such as Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain
§ Latest steps and measures taken to resolve Europe’s debt challenges and stimulate economic growth
§ Implications on investments and corporations in both Europe and the United States
§ Outlook for the global economy and key challenges ahead

FOOD DEMOCRACY

There comes a time in a nation’s history when it is incumbent upon it’s people to rise up against abuses of power and to reclaim their rights as defined by the broader social contract that has enabled our democracy to exist for some 235 years.

Occupy Wall Street was born out of a legitimate frustration with the collusion between Big Business and elected officials of the U.S. government. And nowhere is that collusion so great as in food and agricultural production, where 4 firms control 84% of beef packing, 66% of pork production and 1 company (Monsanto) controls more than 93% of soybeans and 80% of corn grown in the U.S.

It’s time for Big Business and our elected officials to stand up for the rest of us. This weekend is our chance to show them we mean business. Join an #Occupy event in a town or city near you.

JP Morgan buys NYPD for $4.6 million

This just in from the New York City Police Foundation website:

JPMorgan Chase recently donated an unprecedented $4.6 million to the New York City Police Foundation. The gift was the largest in the history of the foundation and will enable the New York City Police Department to strengthen security in the Big Apple. The money will pay for 1,000 new patrol car laptops, as well as security monitoring software in the NYPD's main data center.
New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly sent CEO and Chairman Jamie Dimon a note expressing "profound gratitude" for the company's donation.
"These officers put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe," Dimon said. "We're incredibly proud to help them build this program and let them know how much we value their hard work."
Perhaps it's just a coincidence that just as people begin to take out their frustrations with Wall Street by turning out on "the Street" themselves, JPM has given the NYPD's foundation its biggest gift ever.

I suppose the skeptic in me would look at this gift with a jaundiced eye. That skeptic would say that JPM (knew)(feared) believed that a big protest might be coming, and acted accordingly in order to protect its (property) image.

By the way, back when I was a stupid teenager, I had a talk with my Dad about the Vietnam protests. He asked me, "when do the police actually take action against the protesters?" In my foolish youthful exuberance, I suggested that they came out when people got hurt. My Dad said that was nonsense, as anyone could have seen on TV that the police (let's say in Chicago) hurt more people than the crowds did. He then set me straight: "the police come out and start busting heads when property is damaged." I thought about it for a while (I wasn't a complete moron then - I sometimes overcame testosterone poisioning), and realized he was right.

I'm not suggesting there's any connection to the JPM donation (large as it is) and the way the NYPD has acted towards peaceful protesters. I'll leave it to others to figure out what it means.

Activists barred from US; march on Wall St.

This Wednesday's Revolutionaries Live! lecture with UK climate campaign activists John Stewart and Dan Glass has been postponed.

A few days ago, Stewart landed in JFK Airport for a month-long US speaking tour, only to be escorted off the plane by 6 police officers; interrogated for six hours by the FBI, Secret Service, NY police, and Immigration; and put on a plane back to the UK. The other tour member, environmental activist Dan Glass, was stopped by the CIA on the UK side.

Stewart and Glass are celebrated environmentalists who have won support from direct action activists and even Conservatives in the UK Parliament for successful efforts to reduce carbon emissions and stop the expansion of Heathrow airport. For some reason, however, our own government isn't keen on them coming here.

We're going to bring them to you anyway. Join us on Thursday, November 3rd for a special Skype session with these revered (and reviled?) climate revolutionaries. The best part: no transcontinental air emissions involved!

Starts at 4:30pm at City Hall, 250 Broadway Ave
